The name Shamarpa means “the man with the read crown”. Shamarpa was prophesized by the 2nd Karmapa (1204-1283) and expresses the moon-like activity of the Karmapa. In addition the Shamarpa is regarded as an emanation of the Buddha of Limitless Light (Amitabha).

The reincarnations of the Karmapa and the Shamarpa have since the 14th century taken turns at being each other’s student and teacher. They constitute the lineage holders of the Karma Kagyu transmission.

14th Shamarpa, Mipham Chokyi Lodro (born 1952) was recognized and trained by the 16th Karmapa. Shamarpa in turn recognized and enthroned the current 17th Karmapa, Thaye Dorje (born 1983).

The Shamarpa travels regularly to the West where he gives empowerments to thousands of lama Ole Nydahl’s students.
